Scoob (2020), A Very Zoinks Reboot.

A lot of reviews stated that this newest addition to Scooby Doo's releases is too cringy and too Gen-Z, and even though I agree, I actually quite like it!

BUT, Yes, there is a but, sorry, don't get your hopes up just yet.
As a reboot? Scoob is a combination of Jeepers and Jinkies. 😨😢

The story is cute, but it is all over the place and cliche. Halfway through the movie, you could already guess what is going to happen. But, what I don't expect is the fact that it feels like a lovechild from Despicable Me and Stands By Me Doraemon!
Which, as much as I like both those movies, kinda sucks. Especially if this movie is supposed to be a reboot of the original.

By saying this movie feels like a lovechild between Despicable Me and Stand By Me, I mean it in a way that means the plot is disturbingly.......similar. The Shaggy and Scoob scene at the end? Ugh. Sorry, pal. Doraemon and Nobita did it first.
The Despicable me vibes are seen because of the feature of the villain's sidekick, thousands of very cute robots, and also just the use of the villain and a very big spaceship. The spaceship would be okay, I guess? But, the parade of cute-sidekick-robot just doesn't really sit well with me. It reminds me too much of the Banana song from the Minion.

Besides those resemblances, I don't really want to talk about the storyline, plot holes, or those kinds of stuff, I would just talk about bits and bobs that catch my attention when I was watching the movie.

The first one is, this is very random, but I think this is the first Scooby-Doo movie where I could really see the character's pupil color. If you have watched a lot of Scooby-Doo, you would notice that almost all of them have their pupil black, it was just drawn and animated that way. Consequently, it was nice noticing a bright-colored pupil that matches the official website description.

The second one is the fact that out of all those movies, series, and spin-offs. this is the first time that Fred does not look as dashing as he usually does, except for that series where every character looks like a mix of The Simpsons and Rugrats. Fred in this movie doesn't look good. His younger self looks fine, but his older self? Sorry, Fred. I have always thought you are eye candy, but for this movie, I gotta pass.

The third fact, still revolving around Fred, (I have a lot of interest in him)  is the fact that in this movie he doesn't get his moment! (Fred, Velma, and Daphne's airtime are VERY HORRENDOUS). Which is sad!! Fred is someone I always see as the "parent" of the group, someone who always has a plan, but in this movie, Scooby and Shaggy make the plan. And even though they said it was because they have grown up and the rest of the gangs seems pretty happy when Shaggy and Scoob make the plan, I was not HAPPY. (Why am I so riled up, I'm not even sure)

The fourth complaint also does revolve around Fred, again. And that is because, the only character trait they show Fred has in this movie is that he is the driver of the group and that he is just a dude that loves his car too much, his car as in mystery machine, of course (Even though the van was actually Shaggy's) And meanwhile both those traits are true, I feel like it's missing the ultimate Fred traits which are his love for traps. I mean, he sleeps with a rope! And this trap-loving trait is not even mentioned here? He doesn't make at least one trap? ............Are you sure this is the same Fred from Mystery Inc.? 😢. Let's split up from Scoob, gangs.

For Velma, she got an okay screen time, at least in this case, better than the others, definitely. And she also got the recognition she deserves because she really is the brain of the group, wouldn't really complain about that, though. For Daphne, it's a different case. I may be biased because I am a huge Daphne fan, but she doesn't shine here. She is just portrayed as a  very softhearted, kind girl.................that's a good thing, of course. But the Daphne that I know are more than that, and, what is Daphne without a lil bit of sass? SAD.

All in all, (I got to cut it here because if I don't this is going to be an essay) this is not Scooby-Doo, it''s too different. I mean the show throwing some Harry Potter, tinder, and Simon Cowell in there! Thus it's more of like the gang is made NEW for this generation, and it does feel very new and.........weird. I get it, it's a "reboot" but surely you can do that without making the gang be a whole different person with a whole different personality.

One thing I really appreciate, though, is the homage they gave to the original series. By how the opening songs are the famous old soundtrack (some people said it was cheesy, but it was fine for me), and how the opening is in the exact same format like the Scooby-Doo: Who are you but with upgraded animation, along with how the Danger prone Daphne are channeled in the movie intro, as well as how they all hide in a vase together. (very classic scooby doo) And last but not least, how they feature Blue Falcon and Dyno mutt! It was a good touch to the movie.

So, yeah. besides the fact that the van is shaped differently and how the inside of the van is more realistic, Scoob (2020), I would say, is an okay-fun-nice movie you can watch in your leisure time that is PG and quite funny and is not as disappointing as Velma and Daphne (2018).

And by an okay-fun-nice movie, I mean it as in an okay movie to watch mindlessly in a sea of animated movies. As a reboot of the Scooby-Doo original? It was a ruff ride (HEHE), t was shitty and it doesn't live up to the original legendary iconic one. A hard pill to swallow, but a very much-needed one. Sigh

It is very cliche, don't say I didn't warn you! But, if you watch this without knowing the fact this was supposed to be a reboot, it would be kind of alright. I still enjoy it, shed some tears, have a little laugh and got a little shocked (I am a wuss). So, it's fine

P.S.: This movie doesn't have any ghost-hunting moments at all AND it revolves around Scooby-Doo and Shaggy more. The title is Scoob, though. So I am not sure if I am even allowed to complain about the screentime........

That is all for the rant, I was planning to watch tons of Scooby-Doo releases but when I watched Scoob I can't help but rant. The review would have to wait! Thank you and bye-bye

  1. maybe its target audience just isn't for you, a nineteen-years-old-soon-to-be-twenty-years-old-girl who frequently watched the old scooby doo and expecting it on this new one like the time hasnt changed. with that being said, this is a good review though (cause i can imagine most of the thing you're complaining about). so kudos to you 👍

p.s i'm wondering is "bobs" a real word? or is it some imaginary word you used? wkwk

    1. the thing is that I very much understand it's supposed to be a reboot, but this feels like a forced one, and if an already Scooby-Doo lover is not the segmentation they aim for, this movie flop because it doesn't own any distinct feature that makes it iconic. Thank you for saying this was a good review, though. I made it in a spur of moment because I got so mad at the injustice towards Fred.

p.s : Did I use bobs on the article? I am too lazy to read it again. But, I am pretty sure it's an actual word, you can use it like "My room is cluttered with unimportant bits and bobs." (((kayanya)))
